Swiftwater Scholar® is a unique masterclass experience for existing swiftwater rescue technicians to take them to the next level through an intensive programme covering a wide range of contemporary theory and practice lessons including at least six of the following professional development modules:

  1. Swiftwater body recovery (Swiftwater Recovery Specialist)
  2. Micro-rope systems for swiftwater water rescue using Teufelberger TecReep
  3. ECHO risk assessment tool and mobile app
  4. Targeted Incident Planning System (TIPS) for swiftwater incidents
  5. Captive Bolt Line Throwing (C-BOLT) systems
  6. Management of flood rescue operations
  7. Animal rescue operations during swiftwater operations.
  8. Swiftwater rescue techniques from vehicles (SRTV®)
  9. Virtual reality incident command simulation
  10. Swiftwater breathing apparatus (SWBA®) Specialist
    1. Pre-requisite: Must also have dive medical within the previous six months; and ISO 24801-1 (supervised diver certification) such as PADI Scuba Diver or higher certification; and logged dive within 6 months of course.
  11. Swiftwater breathing apparatus (SWBA®) Instructor
    1. Requires completion of SWBA®) Specialist
  12. AQUA-EYE AI enabled underwater sonar system operation for body location

Developed by Dr Steve Glassey, this proprietary programme is exclusive to PSI Global Accredited Training Providers and is delivered internationally in a blended learning format consisting of online, workshop and post-course assessment activities.


Pre-requisites:

Participants must hold a recognized and current swiftwater rescue technician certification, be in good physical condition, and be confident to swim in a Class III (Grade 3) flow.

Recognized swiftwater rescue technician certification includes PSI Global, IPSQA, NFPA, DEFRA, PUASAR002, SRT1 etc. PSI reserve the right to determine such recognition. 

It is recommended (but not essential) that participants also hold:

  • Advanced First Aid/Emergency Medical First Responder or higher
  • Incident Management System (e.g. NIMS, ICS, GSB, AIIMS, CIMS, ISO etc) certification or experience
  • Motor vehicle extrication certification or experience

Target Audience:

This course is ideal for team leaders, technical advisors, subject matter experts, instructors from both civilian and military units who are seeking professional development that is both academically and practically challenging.

Duration:

The course is normally taught with 24-30 hours of self-directed online learning, followed by up a to 5-7 day face-face workshop (practical sessions, discussions, lectures, and team-based activities). Participants also work together to give presentations or activities as part of facilitated peer learning. Extended workshop days are common to this programme (i.e. evening activities). Scheduling of topics within the programme depends on the facilities, weather and other variables.

A short essay or report is also required to be submitted within 90 days of the workshop to conclude the requirements of Swiftwater Scholar®.

Certification:

Participants who successfully complete all course requirements (online learning, workshop, post-course essay/report) will be issued a certificate of completion for Swiftwater Scholar® and may refer to themselves as such. A Swiftwater Scholar® challenge coin is also issued to all participants who meet attendance requirements of the programme. Certifications for SWBA® and SRTV® may also be issued where included. Optional IPSQA Assessment is also available (POA) to be added prior to the programme.

Where our SRTV® course is embedded in the Swiftwater Scholar programme, we can also offer RPL access for PUASAR001 and PUASAR002 in partnership with Group314 (additional fee applies).

Location: 

This course can be delivered globally, at a location to suit client and course requirements including Auckland (NZL), Shannon (NZL), Al Ain (UAE). Other improvised sites can also be negotiated.
